NFT investing requires careful accounting of the multiple fee layers that eat into apparent gains. Our calculator shows your true profit after all marketplace fees, creator royalties, and network gas costs.
The Real Cost of NFT Trading
When you buy and sell an NFT, multiple parties take a cut: the blockchain (gas), the marketplace (typically 2.5%), and the creator (royalties, 0–10%). On a $10,000 NFT flip with $500 in gas and 7.5% in fees, your $2,000 profit becomes just $750 after costs.
NFT Marketplaces and Their Fee Structures
OpenSea: 2.5% seller fee. Blur: 0% (but incentivises royalty payments). Magic Eden (Solana): 2% fee. LooksRare: 2% fee. Royalty enforcement varies — Blur allows buyers to optionally pay royalties while OpenSea enforces them on-chain for newer collections.
Calculating NFT Gas Costs
Ethereum NFT transactions typically involve: approval transaction (~$5–20), purchase transaction ($10–100+), and sale transaction ($10–100+). Gas costs vary dramatically with network congestion. Polygon and Solana NFTs cost cents per transaction.
NFT Tax Reporting
Each NFT purchase creates a cost basis (purchase price + gas + fees). Each sale is a disposal. Minting and trading NFTs may trigger income tax or CGT depending on your activity level. The IRS has indicated NFTs may be taxed as collectibles (28% cap rate) in the US, making long-term holding especially valuable.
